RailTab - The digital assistant for train drivers

RailTab provides train drivers with all travel-related information digitally and up-to-date – timetable, slow zones, and the digital command in a clear, always updated view. Based on the EBuLa data of DB InfraGO, runnable on commercial tablets and developed together with our partner INAVET.

The challenge

How does the operation remain reliable when construction sites and slow zones become the norm?

Construction sites, slow zones, and short-term changes shape the operation in regional rail transport – the demands for punctuality and quality remain consistently high. The real problem is not the lack of information but their fragmentation: they come from different sources, are sometimes on paper and in separate systems and can even contradict each other in detail. This costs time, increases the workload in the cockpit, and the training effort for the driving personnel.

The solution

All travel-relevant information in one view

RailTab combines the digital train itinerary and slow zones into a unified depiction: timetable data in black, slow zones highlighted in red. The interface consciously follows the familiar structures from the train itinerary and EBuLa and runs automatically based on GPS data. Changes from planning and operation are available promptly through direct connection – paper-based processes are reduced, and the currency of information increases.

Functionality

How RailTab works

RailTab connects three levels: The sources – timetable, slow zones, and additional data from DB InfraGO, which will first be made digitally available and process-secure from the schedule change in 2027. The processing by our partner INAVET, which merges and synchronizes the data based on kilometers. And the provision by ETC Solutions as a consolidated view on the tablet, in real-time, with or without the EBuLa on-board device.

Reliability

What happens if an interface fails?

If an interface fails or communication is interrupted, tiered fallback levels compliant with Ril guidelines according to the guidelines of DB InfraGO (including Ril 408, 420, and 497) come into play. This way, the supply of the cockpit with travel-relevant information is ensured even in case of disruptions – digitalization and operational safety go hand in hand.

Extensions

Modularly expandable

Beyond the basic function, four extensions can be added individually, seamlessly integrated into the same view:

RailTab – The Digital Driver's Cab

Digital command

Digital command messages as an additional view alongside the timetable, accessible by train number and access code.

AI Forecast including RI Forecast Machine (RIPA)

Control center & infrastructure data

Staff, vehicle, and track changes as well as connection grants from the DatNet control center, directly embedded in the timetable.

Automatic Passenger Counting (APC)

Document management (KSV)

Document management with document switch and regulation manager KSV, including receipt confirmation and acknowledgment.

Passenger information via WhatsApp

Green function / train running regulation

ZLR in the versions DAS-C and DAS-O for predictive, energy-optimized driving; optionally as a separate driver assistance system.

A particular advantage: Track mapping as well as connection and track change data are already available in DatNet and can be displayed immediately in the timetable without additional integration.

Introduction

How quickly can RailTab be introduced?

RailTab runs on commercial tablets (recommended from 10 inches), can be used with or without the EBuLa onboard device, and does not require additional hardware. The basis is the digital timetable and track data of DB InfraGO from the schedule change in 2027.
