Central platform for TramTrain networks - AVG Karlsruhe
The Karlsruhe model centrally managed
The Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) centrally manages the Karlsruhe model, with dispatching, forecasting, and passenger information in one system across rail, tram, and bus. A central platform unites the entire dual-system operation for 210 vehicles and ensures consistent operational management across all modes of transport.

About AVG
210 vehicles
New Stadler TramTrain platform vehicles for both networks
Hybrid network: Full railway + light rail/tram in urban operation
The challenge
How do you manage a hybrid network with different regulations on a single platform?
The 'Karlsruhe Model' is a pioneering project: Light rail vehicles operate on railway lines and vice versa, a so-called dual-system operation. This model brings immense operational complexity:
Vehicles switch between railway and tram infrastructure
Different legal regulations (EBO vs. BOStrab) apply depending on the track section
Various control systems and signal box technologies must be operated simultaneously
Fragmented standalone solutions led to media discontinuities, manual input, and error-prone processes
The growing operation required a solution that can centrally manage multiple operators and modes of transport
The solution
One system for operations and passenger information
With an integrated platform, the solution unites scheduling, forecasting, and passenger information on a common data basis. This makes dual-system operations across rail, tram, and bus controllable in real time, without standalone solutions and with consistent information across all channels.
New central control center with real-time fleet monitoring
New passenger information system across all channels
Interface landscape for the hybrid network: connection to signal boxes, vehicles, and PIS
Connection of new Stadler TramTrain platform vehicles for Karlsruhe and Salzburg
Integration of existing screen and audio hardware
Multimodal operation: railway, tram, and bus on one platform
ITCSneo: Real-time scheduling and forecasting without standalone solutions
