The Alb­tal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) cen­tral­ly man­ages the Karl­sruhe mod­el, with dis­patch­ing, fore­cast­ing, and pas­sen­ger in­for­ma­tion in one sys­tem across rail, tram, and bus. A cen­tral plat­form unites the en­tire dual-sys­tem op­er­a­tion for 210 ve­hi­cles and en­sures con­sis­tent op­er­a­tional man­age­ment across all modes of trans­port.

The chal­lenge

How do you man­age a hy­brid net­work with dif­fer­ent reg­u­la­tions on a sin­gle plat­form?

The 'Karl­sruhe Mod­el' is a pi­o­neer­ing project: Light rail ve­hi­cles op­er­ate on rail­way lines and vice ver­sa, a so-called dual-sys­tem op­er­a­tion. This mod­el brings im­mense op­er­a­tional com­plex­i­ty:

  • Ve­hi­cles switch be­tween rail­way and tram in­fra­struc­ture

  • Dif­fer­ent le­gal reg­u­la­tions (EBO vs. BOStrab) ap­ply de­pend­ing on the track sec­tion

  • Var­i­ous con­trol sys­tems and sig­nal box tech­nolo­gies must be op­er­at­ed si­mul­ta­ne­ous­ly

  • Frag­ment­ed stand­alone so­lu­tions led to me­dia dis­con­ti­nu­ities, man­u­al in­put, and er­ror-prone process­es

  • The grow­ing op­er­a­tion re­quired a so­lu­tion that can cen­tral­ly man­age mul­ti­ple op­er­a­tors and modes of trans­port

The so­lu­tion

One sys­tem for op­er­a­tions and pas­sen­ger in­for­ma­tion

With an in­te­grat­ed plat­form, the so­lu­tion unites sched­ul­ing, fore­cast­ing, and pas­sen­ger in­for­ma­tion on a com­mon data ba­sis. This makes dual-sys­tem op­er­a­tions across rail, tram, and bus con­trol­lable in real time, with­out stand­alone so­lu­tions and with con­sis­tent in­for­ma­tion across all chan­nels.
